Visiting Emrys can be the trip of a lifetime, as long as you take proper precautions. Fortunately, much of what you’d do while traveling on Earth (bring an extra phone charger, wear comfortable shoes, have an emergency contact, etc) will apply when heading to Emrys as well.
Due to the nature of inter-dimensional travel, only two major concerns should be at the forefront of your mind during your trip: keep an eye on the time, and stay away from the shrines!
Keep an eye on the time
As we mentioned in our first travel blog, the worlds of Emrys and Earth have many distinguishing characteristics, namely that Emrys has a magical core! This core fuels the life and spell-casting ability of all Emryns, but can prove to be toxic to humans with prolonged exposure. This is why travel between the two worlds is only permitted for a single day and why you’ve got to keep track of the clock!
The portals are only open for a specific amount of time, so if you’re stuck: you’re stuck! Humans can’t survive more than a few days with prolonged exposure to Emrys’ magical energy, so don’t tempt fate: leave plenty of time to get back to the portal. Fortunately, portals are almost always located near city hub, so anything you’d want to visit or see during your stay should be close by.
Oh! And did you know: your phone will totally work on Emrys! The wonders of magic and technology, right? Definitely keep an extra charger on hand so you can not only keep track of time, but also take lots of pictures and videos to take back to your home world. Wi-fi is free and available everywhere on Emrys (with the help of that wonderful magical core!). This year, the inter-dimensional hashtag is #PortalFest2019 so if you’re posting, be sure to use it so everyone can see the awesome time you’re having!
Don’t enter the Shrines!
We realize the Shrines may be the “cool place to hang,” especially for teenage Emryns, but the shrines are closed to the public for a reason.
The Shrines were built around areas of high magical concentration, and the effect of such a high amount of concentrated magic has not been studied by scholars. Who knows what could happen to a human down there!
Just to ensure you’re not even remotely tempted to explore beyond the safety of the Festival proper, there are also whispers of dangerous creatures called Grievances who wander the Shrines. According to citizens of Emrys, Grievances used to be Emryns, but something changed them, altering their forms and making them prone to aggression.
If you find yourself in a situation in which you do encounter a Grievance, do not panic and do not try to fight it yourself. Find an escape route or an Emryn authority with knowledge of offensive magic. As a human, you naturally won’t have the know-how to cast spells to defend yourself.
As long as you avoid the shrines, you shouldn’t need to worry: Grievances are not a concern during day-to-day Emryn life. So: stay away from the shrines, and you’ll be fine!
Find a friend (or two) to show you around!
Next time, we’ll detail some of the activities you can enjoy in while at the Festival in Emrys. We think the best way to celebrate your arrival in Emrys is finding Emryn friends to show you around town….maybe even meeting up with someone you’ve been able to talk with online! Arkeo, one of the oldest and most celebrated locations for the Festival, has lots of entertaining locations we hope you check out. So, let your Emryn friends know you’re coming and ready for a fun -- and safe! -- time.
In addition to studying up on these travel tips, we think the best way to get excited and ready for your travels to Emrys is to wishlist The World Next Door on Steam, so you’re ready to travel as soon as the Festival begins!
Talk you all soon,
